Tale writing

Your piece should take approximately 5 to 25 minutes to read, bearing in mind that it will be read as a performance. An average tale would therefore typically consist of around 2,500 to 3,000 words.

It may be a short story or verse of virtually any genre but it must be original, in every sense.

Of course, it should be totally your own work. You would be entirely responsible, legally, for any plagiarism, copyright infringement or libel. We do not indemnify you against this.

Your tale must not be obscene.

Your storyline and the way in which you present it must have originality, in the sense that it must intrigue and fascinate the listener.

As to structure, the only advice we have is as follows. The beginning must be immediately attention grabbing. The main body of the story must hold that attention and build on the initial interest. The end must be satisfying and, very often but not always, unpredictable.

Your piece should be carefully crafted and written in a clear, readable style. It must be grammatically sound, although you may, of course, write it in a modern idiom. It is worth remembering that many "he said/she said"s can be done without, as the actor reading your piece will probably be using different voices. Similarly, adjectives describing tone, emotion etc. can also be replaced by an instruction to the actor to say the line in that way, eg. "quietly disappointed".

Your tale may or may not be fictional. It might well be anecdotal. But remember that it is your piece of work and all responsibility for such matters as accuracy, or even libel potential, lie with you.

To summarise, the stories you should submit to us should be original, "performable" and they should hold the listeners from start to finish, leaving them satisfied.
